Introduction

Various deceases and viruses has become a widespread issue in other nations and also in our country today. It has been categorized unto its levels of effect to the health of the people and the cause of how it is being acquired. Some can be cured through immediate medication and random set of test’s, but some doesn’t have remedies but can be prevented, this is because to its undefined symptoms and effect to the body of a certain person. One of the alarming viruses that has been unto several cases here in the Philippines is the Dengue.

The Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by the bite of an infected female Aedes mosquito. This can be cause by any one of four closely related dengue viruses. The mosquito becomes infected when it bites a person with dengue virus in their blood. It can’t be spread directly from one person to another person. Symptoms appear in 3–14 days average 4–7 days after the infected bite. Some of this symptoms may include:

Dengue fever is like a normal flu-like illness that affects infants, young children and adults. There is no specific treatment for dengue fever. Severe dengue is a potentially fatal complication, but early clinical diagnosis and careful clinical management by experienced physicians and nurses often save lives. This has been also the cause of the rapid number of children being hospitalized every year.

The Philippine’s exposure to dengue cases has become an alarming situation in the country. According to the National Epidemiology Center of the Philippines’ the Department of Health reports a total of 59,943 dengue cases from January 1 to September 6,2014. This is 59.57% lower compared to last year (148,279). Of the total cases, 10.47% came from Northern Mindanao Region X, 9.6% from CARAGA Region XIII, 9.19% from Davao Region Region 11.from Region IV-A and , Region III, which are 8.93% and 8.01% respectively, to the overall figure.

As an immediate response to the rapid spread of the Dengue virus into the body and to assure the case of the infected person , a product of study was made  by the Research and Biotechnology Division of the St. Luke’s Medical Center with the help of the Department of Science and Technology DOST,  they developed a “point-of-care” test for dengue meant to be simple enough to be done even by people without medical training.

The pregnancy type test kit for dengue is like a pregnancy test kit, but it is just only for dengue. Just place a few drops of blood into a plastic wand, and you can see if you’re positive after 15 minutes. Like in the ordinary off-the-shelf pregnancy test, a strip of specially-treated materials soaks up the fluid and changes color in the presence of specific chemicals.

According to Dr. Mark Pierre Dimamay one of the members of the research team, the problem with dengue is that its most common symptom fever is usually shrugged off by sufferers, delaying medical attention. It’s only when the fever persists for three or four days that people decide to consult a doctor. But by then, the dengue will already have progressed so time is of the essence.Dengue should not be a fatal disease, it only becomes deadly when treated too late or not treated at all.
While it is too early for them to tell how much this device might cost, the  research team is hoping that it is around the cost of a pregnancy test since they are similar in format.

A prototype of the product has already been produced, with field testing scheduled for next year.

How it works

The dengue test prototype is designed to detect dengue even in its earliest stages, well before the breakout of any tell-tale fever.

The test involves two strips: one that detects the dengue virus itself in the earlier stages of contamination, and another that reacts to the antibodies produced after virus numbers have subsided.

This is because, once the dengue virus enters a person, it multiplies until it reaches a peak level; this is when the symptoms, like fever, start to manifest. But after the fourth day of contamination, virus numbers drop as the body counterattacks by producing antibodies which determines the number of weeks being infected.

So the test works by detecting both the virus and the antibodies produced in its wake.

Other existing methods

A similar device called the Rapid Dengue Test is already available in the market. Unlike the point-of-care prototype of the St. Luke’s team, it only detects the antibodies against dengue, which appear in the blood four to five days after the onset of fever.

Yet another device called the Dengue NS1 Ag Strip is being used by some hospitals to test early dengue infection. However, it still won’t fit the ideal point-of-care test, because its end-users are still healthcare professionals: The patients cannot perform this test by themselves. Methods for diagnosing dengue like the Nucleic Acid Amplification, serological methods, and virus isolations require technical expertise and a lot of time, which don’t make them ideal point-of-care screening tools for general feversThese methods need a laboratory and specialized equipment, plus the technical expertise of the people performing the tests. These methods would also take at least half a day to finish, according to Dr. Dimamay.

As the rapid number of people being hospitalized every year due to dengue, the innovation like the pregnancy type test kit for dengue can be an immediate tool in determining the direct case of the symptoms being undergone by the person. This could also determine the antibodies as to how long the body has been infected by the virus. And such, person suffering with such symptoms could immediately know his/her case and that it could be treated as soon as possible by the medical experts, so that the virus could be detected and can somehow be prevented in spreading. This is also a way in preventing sudden deaths of people due to dengue, because in just a number of minutes you could already determine if your positive of dengue or not. Because, in cases like dengue “Early prevention is a must”.

How is Development Communication as an Art and Science of Human Communication?

Communication is the key to human development. According to Nora C. Quebral development communication as an art and science of human communication is applied to the speedy transformation of a country and the mass of its people from poverty to dynamic state of economic growth that makes possible greater social equality and the larger fulfillment of the human potential.

Our country is facing different kinds of problems in social, economic, agricultural, and industrial and many more. As, Development Communication communicators we can communicate with them and stressed the main roots of their problem and make an immediate action. Helping people in all levels of communication, through communication media techniques like for example social networking it can develop human thoughts, and can catch the curiosity of the audience and increasing human participation. In our generation today we are influence by modern technology, development communication can be useful in terms of developmental projects with the use of media.

Development communication is a big help in our progressive country, there is a dynamic strategy behind people participation, like for example communication activities, exchanging ideas and information in a very productive way. Face to face communication is the best way because there is a bridge understanding between you and the person you are dealing with.

We are living in a communication age there is a full impact of communication and the development we are having right now, are can be seen. Development involves change and we are also making change.

Communication focuses on a long process that can change our behavior.

As we look in the future the communication of rural development will be upon us. Helping us in our living and making our life to become easier. That was devcom is.

Human Communication Roles in Development Communication

Communication is necessary in the world. We are obliged to communicate in order to live life harmoniously. Can you just imagine what will happen if we don’t know the art of communication? Exactly! This world will start and end up in an unorganized way. No understanding and no development at all.

Human communication plays an important role in development communication. Humans are the centered of development. We find ways on how to achieve the kind of development we wanted and needed. As a human being, we have the answers on how important human communication is in achieving our goals in life. As much as we know, we are lucky to be born with skill and knowledge on how to communicate. We just have to know how to develop these.

Development Communication can be simply discussed using only two terminologies, Development and Communication itself. On my own words, it is a tool on achieving desired goals which can result to the development of a certain place through the use of human communication in forms of science and technology and artistry.

Human Communication promotes development if actively practiced. The concept of people’s participation creates development. As they say, Development Communication is an art and science of human communication. Indeed, development was brought by the advancement of science and technology in our society. Technology made our lives easier. These thought may give us a hope of achieving development in a faster way with the use of different technologies such as the use of Social Media. Technology is already part of human communication. It creates a bridge on giving and getting information no matter where we locate ourselves. With the modernization we have now, human communication improved in a way we never expected.

Indeed, active human communication plays a big role in development communication.

Development Communication: scientific and technological breakthroughs

“The basic building block of good communications is the feeling that every human being is unique and of value.”

In the year 1972 Nora C. Quebral , who also known as the “Mother of Development Communication turned a phrase “Development Communication”  which she gave explanation that it is “the art and science of human communication linked to a society’s planned transformation from a state of poverty to one of dynamic socio-economic growth that makes for greater equity and the larger unfolding of individual potential”. (Khan, 2009)

Communication is meant for every individual on how we deal and interact with other people and also to every little thing that surrounds us and Development was driven by the process of mankind’s evolution and later it was driven by technological human progress.

What is the significance of development communication in popularizing breakthroughs in science and technology?

In our present time, we, people know that there is high existence of technology in any part of the world. Science and Technology are linked hand in hand, because science is the intellectual practice or what we called “knowledge” and technology is the medium used to apply our knowledge.

Science and Technology is almost part of our everyday life, even we do not always see it but wherever we go, whatever we do, we can’t deny that there is always Technology.

In this way, the significance of development communication which has various characteristics that also implies balance creativity with understanding and its various contributions as it helps developed the challenge of sustainable global development, especially when it comes into social media that contributes in popularizing breakthrough in science and technology through giving more information to broaden people’s knowledge on how much of a role does technology play in those meaningful address of different problems in our society.

DevCom: Disseminating Innovations in Science and Technology

Science is the study of knowledge which depends on seeing and testing facts while technology is the practical application of scientific knowledge. A nation cannot be developed without science and technology because it is associated with modernity and it is an essential tool for rapid development. Modern gadgets in all aspects of human comfort, production of medicines and other treatment of illness are inventions of science and technology. They are also applied to fields such as architecture and agriculture.

Development Communication can play an important role to build the capacity to make use of scientific and technological knowledge so that development can be successful in achieving goals. Before providing the people these modern technology, one of the things to consider is to educate them on the importance and uses of these things for the development of themselves in particular and of their community in general. This is where development communicators come in. Development communicators can become channels to provide factual information in delivering technological education to communities in practical and useful ways, especially in the rural areas where people have limited knowledge and access on modern technology. They can visit these communities, identify their problems and help them find their solutions. For instance, in agricultural communities where television and radio availability is inadequate, development communicators can visit the residents, bringing with them these new technologies and resource persons who are authorized to conduct trainings to the residents on how to use newly-discovered agricultural breakthroughs. In this way, technologies can be extended to people with the power and skill to use them, thus maximizing their use.

Furthermore, development communicators can establish partnerships with government and non-government organizations to build communication channels to fully integrate the developmental process from governments down to community. This could help them gather more participants during these trainings.

Development Communication will always be related with Science and Technology because they have the same goal – to bring a nation towards progress.

Development Communication: A Key to Human Development

According to Quebral(2006), Development Communication is “the art and science of human communication linked to a society’s planned transformation from a state of poverty to one of dynamic socio-economic growth that makes for greater equity and the larger unfolding of individual potential.”

We live in a communication age, and the full impact of communication on development is just starting to be seen and we also live in a communication era, with rapid expansion in the reach of mass media, and improved techniques for the interpersonal exchange of ideas. Based on the experience of FAO and other agencies, communication for development has reached the stage where it can have a noticeable and rewarding effect on many development programmes.

We, as Development Communication practitioner, can help human communication through helping them to improved their communities first because change must first exists on our own homes. We are conducting events such as programs and activities that could enhance their human communication and their community as well. We’re doing it hand-to-hand in able for us to make even simple change that could lead to higher development.

Communication is the way, indeed the only way – we learn who we are … our sense of identity comes from the way we interact with other people. In short, the way we speak or talk to others simply defines ourselves. As a DevCom practitioner, we must also aware of what is happening to existing problems around us such as poverty, malnutrition and etc. We must know how to react on that certain problems because it defines who we really are.

Therefore, development really starts within us, and there would be no development if there is no communication. Development communication can improve activities at all levels, enhancing management, teamwork and the morale of personnel.

But being a Development Communication student is enjoyable, interesting, wonderful, and that is the main reason for being a communicator.

We're having a small talks with the senior citizens of Brgy. San Roque, Guiramas.
