Bicycle serves as a main method of transportation in the Philippines. Based on 2013 National Labor Force Survey, 37.917 million or 87 % Filipino labor force choose bicycle as the primary mode of transportation according to Rep. Samuel Pagdilao. Biking does not only promotes health and leisure but can be an alternative solution to the high prices of fuel, fares, traffic, noise and air pollution. Also, mobile phone electricity charges can be now saved through cycling. Cycling while Charging, the power of bicycle charger.

The bicycle charger was an innovation made by the undergraduate students of University of Nairobi namely, Pascal Katana and Jeremiah Murimi. The wind is the alternative energy source. It was made out of the idea to use rotation motion of a bicycle wheel to generate electricity using a dynamo. Dynamo is a type of alternator in generating electricity for lighting a small lamp. Once the wheel is rotated, current is induced in coils of copper wire under the influence of a rotating magnetic flux, generated by alternate shifting of magnets to north and south poles which is also known as the fundamental principles of electromagnetism. The charger is made of recycled materials e.g radio parts computer electronic components etc. The market cost of the kit were estimated at Ksh 150 or Php 67.19, however it may vary to the economies of scale in mass production.

Benefits of the innovation

  • It can promote employment and revenue.
  • It can promote sufficient power to charge phones in areas without electricity.
  • It reduces over-reliance on electricity to charge phones.
  • It eliminates the regular cost of charging phones.
  • It can boost consumption of local products and innovation.

Development Communication Essential Component for Science and Technology

The biggest single factor determining any country’s potential for achieving sustainable social and economic growth is ability to access and apply the fruits of modern science and technology in a responsible manner.

Developing countries from  Eastern Europe as well countries in Central Asia  face a wide range of needs, from cheap and effective medicine and more secure food supplies. One factor that can satisfy these needs will be the use of modern science- such as genetically modified crops or how can these countries adapt to the impact of climate change- thus requiring long period of research and a adequate knowledge of different nature. Development can be characterized as putting both scientific and technical process into practice.

But knowledge will not reach those who can benefit from it unless it has been effectively communicated to individuals with the power and skills. Thus development communication became an effective tool to use. Scientists are recognizing the need not only to communicate more freely among themselves – hence the growth of the open access movement – but also to communicate the significance of their work to both policy-makers and to the general public, particularly when it has important social implications, whether for good or, potentially, for ill.

Development Communication play a bigger rule when it comes to science and technology nowadays. Through science will help address all issue of any country such a supply of food, economic needs and even scientific exploration. Communication initiatives have helped to foster recognition, in both political circles and the wider community, which good policy decisions must draw on robust scientific evidence in fields ranging from food security to climate change. The more solid the reasoning behind such decisions, the more likely they are to achieve their desired objective. Given the access to validated knowledge generated by primary research papers.

Development Communication is now described as the science of human communication linked to the transitioning of communities from poverty in all its form to a dynamic, overall growth that fosters equity and unfolding of individual potential. ~Nora Cruz Quebral~

When we speak of development communication today, we are mainly concerned with the majority of people in the so-called developing societies, where in we are using communication as medium to know the main roots of the problem in the society and how this problem may overcome by the people in the societies.

We all know that the Mass Media has greatly influence our lives now a days, it has been an edged out by digital media, mobile media, and social media, where all of this is associated with the computer, broadband and internet. The information and communication technology has become portable, pocket-sized, personal, and affordable and give opportunities especially to the poor countries. The achievements that the development communication brings to us is that, it will keep us in touch to our family and business purposes, and it is also shown a capacity to inform people quickly and it is easier to spread a communication.

Development Communication may not always do research at all times but it should be understand the methods, strengths, and all the limitations to be able to use these findings intelligently. It is important that building the capacity to absorb and make use of scientific and technical knowledge must be placed at the heart of the development. Knowledge will not reach those who can benefit from it unless it has been effectively communicated to individuals with the power and skills to put it into practice.

Technologies have really had a big change our nature. It may lead to better societies or can destroy individual’s life. We must use our social media in good purposes!

Devcom as an Art and Science of Human Communication

How is development communication as an art and science of human communication?

Development Communication is the use of communication in development work. It is the way of how we can develop ourselves. It is an art and science of human communication because through this we can facilitate changes in people and society so that they will be aware of what is happening in their surroundings.

Quebral (1991) defined development communication as an art and science of human communication applied to the speedy transformation of a country and the mass of its people from poverty to a dynamic state of economic growth that makes possible greater social equality and the larger fulfillment of the human potential.

Development communication is an  art because we can create something out of it. Development communication as a science because we do study about the physical and natural world and phenomena, especially by using systematic observation. Development communication is an art and science because through this, we can be more strategic. We can also widen up our knowledge on how we can come up with our goal. Development communication is an art and science of human communication because we share our ideas and thoughts to know our needs and wants. Hence, we will be able to achieve our goals and empower the other people as well.

Indeed, development communication as an art and science is a thing that can make changes in the society because development communication possibly can make equality and fulfillment of the human potential. Development communication aims a development goal to be fulfilled because the main audience  are the masses. Therefore, it gives consideration to the language and culture because it tackles about  environment, population, and science and technology. Thus, the more value is attached to an information, the more important it becomes.

DevCom as an Art and Science for Human Communication

What is development communication?

According to Nora C. Quebral, development communication is the art and science of human communication linked to a society’s planned transformation from a state of poverty to one dynamic socio-economic growth that makes for greater equality and the larger unfolding of individual potentials. The main focus of Development Communication is developing a community through that the effort of the people living on the society.

As it says in Quebral’s definition it is the society’s transformation from a state of poverty to one dynamic socio-ecomonic growth, so it definitely makes a poor society into a better society. As a development practitioners we must be a catalyst for change. It is considered as the art and science of human communication because through different kinds of communications we can help develop a community. The bigest role when it comes to development is given to the people living in a certain participation is a big factor when it comes to developing a community. They say change must start within self.

In a modern society there were a lot of new technologies that can help us promote our advocacies as DevCom practitioners. Just like our social netwoking sites, with just one click we can gain a lot of supporters to make our advocacies possible to happen. But we must not settle for development alone. It must be sustainable development. When we say sustainable development it is the process of maximizing the use of available resources in order to ensure the long-term well-being of present and future beneficiaries. It is a continuous progress which aims for and maintains a constructive state of living in society as preserved by social institutions and systems. And according to one site in the internet, sustainable development entails ecomonic sustainability, social sustainability and cultural sustainability.
