Power plant; Sambong



Sambong or scientific name (Blumea balsamifera) is a medicinal plant came from the family of compositae or family of plants.  It grows up about 1.5-3 meters height and its stem is about 2.5 centimeters. It has yellow flowering heads that is 6mm long, has a seed and bears fruits that are ribbed and hairy on top. This plant grows in tropical countries such as Philippines, Africa, India and also it can be found in eastern Himalayas. This is known in Visayas as “ Bukadkad” .

Since sambong is considered as medicinal plant, it is helpful to introduce this in the community so that they will be able to know the benefits they can get from this plant. As we look in its composition, the benefits we can get from roots to leaves is very useful. Sambong roots and leaves are used for treating rheumatism, headaches, colds, and mild hypertension. Clinical study shows that a high level of sodium (salt) in the blood is a major cause of hypertension. Sambong is diuretic; it helps dispose the excess water and sodium in the body.

The plant possesses a multitude of functions that make worthy for the Department of Health to approve it as an Alternative medicine in treating particular disorders. Like for those who have renal failure. The Philippine National Kidney and transplant Institute (PNKTI) encourage taking sambong as herbal medicine for patient with this problem. This will help them to delay or avert dialysis or even a kidney transplant. Another, Sambong is for anti-cancer. This plant contains methanolic extract that has been found to have therapeutic activity against hepatoma cancer or cancer that starts in the liver. Sambong is also good for fighting anti-fungi and antibacterial for its leaves contains ichthyoreol acetate.

What a good help we have from Sambong. By the achievement that  this medicinal plant has given, Sambong is now registered in the Bureau of foods and drugs as medicine.
