“Electric Incubator: A benefit to the Darag Chicken Production”

Did it ever cross your mind if where those fried chickens that we eat at fast food chains come from? Did you ever wonder how these chickens become so yummy? Or did you ever wonder why fried chickens never go extinct despite that they are the favorite of the people?

However, before we’ll have the secret the fast reproduction of our favorite chicken, let’s know more first about our chickens.

Philippine native chickens are the most common domesticated fowls found in small hold farms. According to the Philippine Council for Agricultural, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development, there are five types of Philippine native chickens in the Philippines. These are the Bolinao type of Philippine native chicken found in Pangasinan, the Banaba type of native chicken in Batangas, the Camarines type of Philippine native chicken found in Bicol, the Darag type of Philippine native chicken in Panay, and the Paraokan type of Philippine native chicken from Palawan.

The type of native chickens as stated above were all found all over the Philippines is one of the biggest factor why the chickens here in the Philippines were well developed is the Electric Incubator. At the moment, The Electric Incubators can more or less produce 50,000 chicken eggs and 20,000 chicks.

Native chickens have a high mortality rate however; one of the main problems of native chicken raisers is the disease. According to the West Visayas State University Research and Development Center said that through the efforts of Dr. Bernabe Bacerra Cocjin, a pioneering mind behind Darag native chicken, his project has developed a disease prevention and control program based on Newcastle disease vaccination and control of avian malaria, coccidiosis and intestinal parasites which reduced the mortality rate of native chickens from diseases.

Such diseases like Infectious Coryza, Fowl Cholera, Avian Mycoplasmosis, Pullorum Disease, Coccidiosis, Avian Malaria, Round Worm Infections, Tape Worm Infections are found in Darag.

So, what are these diseases actually?

Infectious Coryza is an acute respiratory disease of chickens characterized by nasal discharge, sneezing and swelling of the face under the eyes. Fowl Cholera is a contagious, widely distributed disease that affects domestic and wild birds. It usually occurs as a septicemia of sudden onset with high morbidity and mortality but chronic and asymptomatic infections also occur. Avian Mycoplasmosis is an infectious and contagious disease of poultry characterized by respiratory rales, coughing and nasal discharge. The clinical manifestations are slow to develop and the disease has a long course. Pullorum Disease is a primarily acute disease of chicks during the first month of life, characterized by high mortality. It is often found in mature fowl as a chronic infection. It is also known as Bacillary White Diarrhea.

Cocciodiosis is a primarily disease of the digestive tract, its damage is caused by the multiplication of coccidian in the bird’s intestine and ceca. The organisms destroy celss normally use by the birds for digestion absorption and conversion of the food into body substance. The Avian Malaria is caused by parasites of the plasmodium genus. Few of the plasmodium which have been identified appear to be natural parasites of domestic poultry. The large roundworm Ascaridia galli is one of the most common worms of poultry, both male and female worms live in the central portion of the small intestine. It may not cause significant mortality but may retard growth and egg production. Lastly, the tapeworms are poultry are flat, white, ribbonlike, segmented parasites. This parasite clings to the lining of the intestine by means of suction cups located on the head.

These diseases are very harmful however once they are treated as soon as possible, it will be a very big help in the health of the Darag.

Also, the studies of Dr. Cocjin on the ”Darag” native chickens are relevant in developing a product that has export potential and for import substitution to earn ad conserve the country’s foreign currency.

The Philippine Council for Agricultural, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development states that the electric incubator helped sustained their production and one of their primary objectives is to employment. This electric incubator would really be a big help especially those in the poultry production. Through this project, it can help generate job for people the rural area. Moreover, the second benefit for this is the income generating project that will be very helpful in particularly to the people in the rural area.

Moreover, Philippine Council for Agricultural, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development said the from a fowl that is being only left on their own to fend for themselves to a self sustaining income generating chickens. Traditionally, these birds are kept in smallholder farms as sources of meat and eggs and as a source of additional income to rural families.

This is also a great business to get started with, in fact I have seen in the TV program Rated K that a mere balot, penoy, and the salted egg producer became a millionaire just by selling and continuously producing eggs.

This only proves that creativity in the Filipino people is natural and those who really strive  hard for the betterment of their lives are those being rewarded with blessing no other people deserve than them.

The Electric Incubator is not just a benefit to the people to have living and food to eat, but also a blessing.

DevCom As An Art And Science

How Development communication as an art of science and human communication? We know for a fact that we have been studying the major subject for quite some time now. Now I didn’t say that I am an expert in this sort of thing but we have been exposed in a community a couple of times now as to say that it can be an art of science because of the fact that we deal with people and community and by that it means that from their feelings, thoughts and emotions.

It means a lot of things from being an individual or a group we provide them information that can provide for them to have a better lives and we aim to have it in a meaningful and sustainable way.

In the sense of human communication, basing on what I have tackled in the previous paragraphs that we deal with people and the basic outcome that we ought to reach is to make a difference in the quality of life of an individual or community.

Development Communication is an art because it used the art of mass media that allows it creatively prepare its materials in implementing the development in a certain community. It applies different unique ideas that will catch the attention and also of course the cooperation of the members of the community.

Development Communication is a science because it follows a systematic pattern and does go through the process of scientific method in achieving the development it wants to instill to the community. They identify problems that are from the members of the community themselves and organizers think of what are the most effective ways to counter or solve the issues or problems. They prepare step by step process or have plans to follow in order to achieve development.
