Filipino are known to be clever people. They tend to fix things if broken and if no
original partsavailable they tend to find alternative material which is durable and
accessible to anyone and can make things work.
Housing is a common need of every family here in Iloilo but also generally
in Philippines .Building houses can be very expensive especially and time consuming to those witlimited income and resources this is one of the most challenging thing
of any private and government sector who provide housing needs to the poor and ensuring them to be decent and affordable house.
With a limited buget and resources at stake .Private sector and government
alliances begun to study what would be the best alternate materials in building
houses or even furniture and ensuring the quality of the material being use.
UP Miagao begun to study bamboo technology and ways how to improve its durability and reliability as a housing alternative material
due to its abundance herein Iloilo UP Miagao start to pirate community
bamboo enterprise that set up bamboo nurseryplantation and harvest
bamboo for engineered bamboo. This study mostly generate general public but mostly municipality and government in charge for housing for the poor.
Bamboo is one of the abundant material found in Iloilo, majorly found in
area like Maasin known as the bamboo center in the province of Iloilo,
other area like New Lucena And Oton.Bamboo as a building material has long
been utilized all through out Iloilo and Philippines in general, though mostly it is considered as a building material that will not last long.Bamboo is one
of the practical alternatives being considered building houses not only cheaper,
reducing the use of sand, graveland cement mixture but also very practical and cheaper.Bamboo technology has not been generally been available to anyone
but there are people who invested and take time to study about bamboo,
one of the well known place of bamboo techno hub area is Maasin until now and due to recent technological advancements, it is now possible to convert
raw bamboo culmsi nto more conventional lumber and plywood such that it
can be used to build virtually anythingthat traditionally has been made from wood. Not only that since bamboo is a grass it can benefit the forest avoiding cutting
tree One of the example of the alternate bamboo product being use recently
is Bamboo planks. Bamboo planks are long, thin, flat piece of timber, use esp. in building and flooring manufactured from bamboo.
Some Ilonggo tend to just used bamboo connecting raw material to build houses but
it cannot last long especially during bad weather, bamboo plank a newly innovated
engineered bamboo that can last longer than a raw bamboo pole use to build houses.
And the fact that transporting lightweight bamboo is less costly than transporting
heavier housing material such as sand, gravel, and cement. And even production
cost is very costly especially with the machinery being used to gather sand gravels.
Not only that its cheaper it is also considered as an alternate for hardwood since
bamboo will only take 3-4 years growth cycle makes it an environmentally sound
and sustainable alternative for almost anything made from wood, plastic or metal
material for housing. It is also cost-effective, especially in areas where it is
cultivated and is readily available. Compare to other hardwood material such as Acacia
and Narra that will take a while to grow. This can also be considered as environmental friendly.
Bamboo planking has been produce by Municipality such as Maasim, Oton and Sta Barbara.
One of the residence of Sta Barbara Mr Michael Sonza owner of Pliant Graz Incorporation in
Barangay Cabambungan Sta Barbara, Iloilo produce bamboo planking slab materials that
can be used for bamboo flooring, and other made product such as chair, even ballister for
four years already.
They started supplying material to Dep.ED and any Government agency. Not only that, most residence of Sta Barbara considered bamboo planks when making their houses since its very cheap and easy to be made , they own factory at Brgy Cabambungan and even supply outside Western Visayas such us Manila and Pampanga. Mr Sonza started their business initially as Kawayan supplier for Manila Bamboo furniture maker such as Bamboza having been a Kawayan supplier for several years and After bamboza close its business some of its machinery were sold to Mr Sonza four years ago and said exposures inspired the sprightly bamboo enthusiast to learn the nitty-gritty of making engineered bamboo. He started his own company and started producing bamboo made products.Inspired by what he has accomplished and knowing that he could do more, he hopes to acquire a bamboo processing machine for making engineered bamboo slats or planks.
Mr Sonza started to produce bamboo planks as alternate housing material and begun producing it in a large quantity.People started to recognized to the durability of bamboo planks/slabs and started to supply even Manila.People tend Mr Sonza have
the right machinery to flatten bamboo that can help them to produce bamboo
plank in shorter period of time. Bamboo planking process and production cost
are very economical but limitation would be the resources of bamboo, since their
haven’t any study yet that was made by DENR and DA that can provide complete
map of bamboo area in Iloilo.Mr Genemel Jun Sonza son of Mr Michael Sonza
currently manages their factory and owned the company. He informed me that
it will be economically effective, and practical once if practice on all municipality
of Iloilo. Currently Mr Sonza trying to coordinate with their local government
to make individuals aware of the used and benefit. Bamboo planking requires 2-3 years
old bamboo to be use,as Mr. Sonza said it will make it shrinkage minimal since
bamboo is soft and tend to shrink and crack when exposed to a high temperature,
it is as longlasting as its wooden correlates, when properly harvested and maintained
this will help bamboo to last long in dry areas since bamboo tend to shrink especially
during dry season, process of planking consist of nine to ten process like cutting,
stripping skin making sure it should all in the same size and need to completely
remove the outer skin and the best fiber density would next to the skin so you don’t
have to shave of 1/4 inch to get flat strip. And avoid having inclination like have a curve
side out when stripping. And since bamboo have little cross grain you must provide
good cross grain to have a durable bamboo plank, mud removing, boiling that will
eliminate starch to avoid insects like termites and ants since after cutting bamboo
will exposed it is recommended once cut boil immediately, drying, and connecting
using of adhesive,Pliant Graz owner informed me they are using D4 type of adhesive,
Mr Sonza preferred eco friendly material even when it comes to adhesive,it is solvent
free industrial grade D4 wood adhesive based upon latest hybrid resin technology.
I ask Mr Sonza if he would consider chemically based bamboo plank, he said no,
yes it might lengthen the durability of material but it will have negative to those
who will be using the material thus in dangering other peoples health is not good
for anyone and for his business. And to easily dry the bamboo plank they used a
man made oven that has the right temperature for the bamboo while avoiding cracks.
Mr. Sonza provided several benefit of bamboo. bamboos’ inherent strength and great
capacity for shock absorption, which makes it particularly useful in
earthquake-prone areas. and hardness actually makes it a better option for many products
such as tables, doors and even housing flooring Bamboo plank unfinished slab form
standard measurement is 4 inches by 39 inches to make this will need to sanded
and finish with a sealer to avoid damage due to excessive dryness. And advisable
to be sealed with plastic wrapping if shipping until you are ready to begin.
I ask Mr Sonza several benefits of the bamboo plank there producing here are some of the advantages. First of it easy to cut, shape and maintained no need of a sophisticated device Anyone can make one, thus mostly within his area of residence people tend to start using bamboo plank and their local DENR and DA are aware of this innovation they have. Because of its natural characteristic bamboo planks are suitable for all type of structure could be ballister or even house flooring, wall paneling and even furniture. Bamboo flooring make from slab of bamboo plank compared to concrete flooring look elegant and even make the floor look bigger. And very organic and natural feel to any home. Engineered bamboo though not yet been introduced on majority of Iloilo Municapality but have high potential as current innovation of housing, though several communities who only used engineered bamboo but Mr. Sonza hope that someday Ilonggo would have the right survey of bamboo area in Iloilo that can help them reach out providing better housing to every Ilonggo needs better houses.
