It has been almost four years of staying in West Visayas State University carrying the title as a Bachelor of Science in Development Communication Practitioner and I am proud of it.
Some might not actually understand what DevCom is, what it does. Some don’t really know. Some say that I’ll end up working in communities that need help and yes it would be a pleasure since that’s what we really want to do.
Quebral (1991) stated that Development Communication is the art and science of human communication linked to a society’s planned transformation from a state of poverty to one of socio-economic growth that makes for greater equity and larger unfolding individual potential.
Why art? Oxford Dictionary defines art is as works produced by human creative skill and imagination which makes DevCom more fruitful. DevCom practitioners don’t hold seminars just for the sake of having it. But they conduct public programs or seminars such as community development in different artistic ways that will eventually let the audience visualize how colorful their lives can be.
And why science? You see, the beauty of development communication is a silent systematic approach wherein it has this mission of developing the world. Through the help of science everything can be possible. The birth of social networking sites, DevCom practitioners and foundations may be able to voice out their thoughts and influence others to a mission in lending a hand to others in need.
DevCom speaks what is really out there. The lives of millions of people is poor and for them to improve their lives better, their efforts are needed. DevCom trace the problems and it help them cure these problems through information and communucation.
That’s what DevCom is all about, touches and transforms a community to a better one, artistically and scientifically.
